A Special Valor
Published in Paperback by New American Library Trade (March, 1985)
Author: Richard Wheeler
Average review score:

Gung Ho!
This book reports the Pacific campaigns of the United States Marine Corps during World War II. The narrative kept my attention throughout and I found it hard to put this book down. It is one of the best accounts I have read about the USMC in WWII. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in an overview which portrays the Marines' sacrifices during their brutal island hopping strategy which was instrumental in America's ultimate victory over Japan ending WWII.

The Stakeholder Corporation: The Body Shop: Blueprint for Maximizing Stakeholder Value
Published in Hardcover by Financial Times Prentice Hall (15 May, 1997)
Authors: David Wheeler, Maria Sillanpaa, and Anita Roddick
Average review score:

a review of the stakeholder corporation
I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to know about socially responsible business, and how to go about preparing a report on socially responsible and environmentally sustainable business through involvement of stakeholders. The book gives a good conceptual and historical introduction and background into governance and the problems and issues of shaeholder governance. Both authors have had involvement in triple bottom line reports and audits of The Body Shop, which gives a realistic base to their comments. Highly recommended.

The Stone River Assignment
Published in Paperback by Rutledge Books, Inc. (September, 1900)
Author: John Wheeler
Average review score:

Don't Miss This One
The Stone River Assignment is an amazing book. Somehow riveting (no pun intended) even though the weight of the story is truly on the business of downsizing Stone River Metalworks, and the characters are in the service of that larger story. The way things work, and the way people don't always fit into the working scheme is a fascinating theme and certainly speaks to our experience. It's rare to get away with this kind of structure in a novel, and Wheeler has done it beautifully. There are two intertwined story-lines that play off each other. One is the corporate story, and the other is a love story. The idea that the hero is going to find himself in a really difficult position, when it comes to the interests of the corporation - because of his compassion and especially because of his love for the boss' daughter - makes the book incredibly compelling. The hero of this book, a moral and ethical person, is in a position of great power in the corporation. He has to deal with a terrible challenge. The story quietly and compellingly gathers dimension as it progresses. The book is interesting on many levels and has important things to say about the way we live. Wheeler has found a fine balance between characters and business matters and has worked it well throughtout the book. I greatly enjoyed reading this book. The pacing is flawless, the characters are idiosyncratic and sympathetic, and Wheeler makes us really care what happens.

Storm Riders (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (February, 1902)
Authors: Edward Gorman and Ed Gorman
Average review score:

A great western read.
The front cover has a quote from the Rocky Mountain News that describes Gorman as "Simply one of the best Western writers of our time." I have to agree. This is a very fast paced, exciting story that is part mystery, part revenge story, and part love story. Another great western from Gorman.

Stratagem and the Vocabulary of Military Trickery (Mnemosyne Supplement 108)
Published in Paperback by Brill Academic Publishers (August, 1997)
Author: Everett L. Wheeler
Average review score:

Tricks of the Trade
Wheeler's book is invaluable--as much for providing the ancient Greek and Latin terms for stratagems as for his discussions of the Odysseus and Achilles ethos. While this is supposed to be a primer in the strategies of war, it functions amazingly well as a primer in understanding the rhetoric and writings of such political philosophers and essayists as Plato, Plutarch, Montaigne, Bacon, and Emerson. Military trickery and rhetorical trickery have the same ends--for the ancients, the moderns, and the neocons.

Tales of the American West
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (May, 2001)
Authors: Richard Wheeler and Robert S. Wheeler
Average review score:

Wheeler knows Western fiction
Richard Wheeler, author of some of the best historical novels of the Old American West ever written, has gathered here stories from many of his fellow Spur Award writers--Loren Estleman, Richard C. House, Glendon Swarthout, Elmer Kelton, Richard Matheson, Jeanne Williams, Sandra Whiting, among them--and fashioned a superb anthology of the modern Western. Nobody knows the craft of Western fiction better than Wheeler and his introduction to this excellent collection is a masterpiece in itself.
